Partners With Power

The Social Transformation Of The Large Law Firm

Robert L. Nelson

Book cover titled "Partners with Power: The Social Transformation of the Large Law Firm" by Robert L. Nelson, with a blue background and a yellow banner at the bottom left corner reading "UC Press Voices Revived."

Overview

Nelson's first book examines how large American law firms are organized and how they reconcile the ideals of professional autonomy with the demands of serving powerful corporate clients. Based on study of large Chicago firms, it analyzes recruitment, careers, internal authority, and the relationship between lawyers and the businesses they represent. The book questions the image of the independent professional and shows how firm structure shapes lawyers' work and values. It established the line of inquiry into the legal profession and large-firm practice that Nelson developed across his career.

Nelson's first book. Reissued in the University of California Press "Voices Revived" reprint program.
