Overview

This edited collection examines the distance between the professional ideals American lawyers hold and the realities of their day-to-day practice. The essays consider how ideas about professionalism shape lawyers' behavior and what those ideas imply for reform. Nelson and Trubek contribute framing chapters on new paradigms for studying the profession and on the contexts in which professional ideologies operate. The volume is an early statement of themes — professionalism and the social organization of practice — that run throughout Nelson's later work.

Nelson is also a contributing author, with framing chapters in the volume.
